The Virtues of the Day of Arafah
1. It is a Pillar of Hajj
Abdur Rahman Ibnu Ya'mar رضي الله عنه narrated that Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Hajj is ‘Arafah”
Tirmidhi 889 transmitted it and authenticed by Shaykh Al-Albaanee.
Shaykh Uthaymīn رحمه الله mentioned:
Whoever misses the standing (in ‘Arafah) has missed Hajj(ie there is no hajj for him.”
Majmu` Fatawa Ibnu Uthaymin 23/24.
2. It is the day which the religion was perfected and Allah’s Favour completed.
that a Jewish man said to him, “O Leaders of the Believer, there is a verse in your Book which you recite; if it had come to us Jews, we would have taken that day as an ‘Eid (festival).” ‘Umar asked, “Which ayah(is that)?” He said: {This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.} [Surah Al-Maa-idah :3]. ‘Umar said, “We know on which day and in which place that (ayah) was revealed to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم. It was when he was standing in ‘Arafah on a Friday.”
Al-Bukhari 7268 and Muslim 3017 Transmitted it.
3. It is a day by which Allah swore an oath.
Allaah تعالى swore:
{ وَشَاهِدࣲ وَمَشۡهُودࣲ }
And by the witnessing day (i.e. Friday), and by the witnessed day [i.e. the day of 'Arafat (Hajj) the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah];
The fact that He swore with it shows its greatness.
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“The promised day is the Day of Resurrection, the witnessed day is the Day of ‘Arafah, and the witnessing day is Jumu'ah (Friday).”
Tirmidhi 3339 transmitted it and authenticaed by Shaykh Al-Albaanee.
Allah تعالى also swore again in another place:
{ وَٱلشَّفۡعِ وَٱلۡوَتۡرِ }
And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah).
Surah Al-Fajr 89:3.
Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنه mentioned: “The even is the Day of al-Ad-haa [i.e., 10th Dhu’l-Hijjah] and the odd is the Day of ‘Arafah [i.e., 9th Dhu’l-Hijjah] This is likewise the view of ‘Ikrimah and Ad-Dahhak.
4. It is a day of ‘Eid for the people who are in that place.
'Uqbah ibn 'Aamir رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
The day of ‘Arafah, the day of An-Nahr (Sacrifice) and the days of At-Tashriq (the 3 days following the days An-Nahr) are ‘Eid (festival) for us, ie the people of Islam. These are days of eating and drinking.”
Abu Dawud 2419 transmitted it.
Note: that's from the reason the pilgrim is prohibited from fasting.
5. It is the day of expiation for two years of sins for the non pilgrim who fast on it.
Abu Qotaadah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
fasting the day of arafat is, I seek from Allah that it expiates the sins of year which preceded and that which is after it. Muslim 1162 transmitted it.
6. It is the day on which Allah took the covenant from the offsprings of Adam.
Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما said that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
